The Library of the Technical University of Crete participates in the
Horizontal and Vertical Action Plan of Greek Libraries, which is part
of the 2nd Community Support Framework. The European Union mainly
provides its funding.
The objectives of the Vertical Action Plan of the Library of the
Technical University of Crete are :
The installation of a networked information system of CD-ROM databases
in which, access will be permitted to all users of the Library.
The ability of the Library to access remote networked databases inland and

related to the research and educational activities of the Technical

Until now, if someone wished to search for information in the CD-ROMs,
he/she had to conduct the research within the Library using the PCs
which have a CD-ROM drive. With the proposed system, everyone having a
computer and access to the Campus network, would be able to use the
This can save time taking into account the fact that the Campus is a
big area. There are millions on line databases available world-wide, of
which the Library subscribes to a relatively small number on CD-ROM.
With the proposed system, tha Library will have access to an extensive
range of databases held on remote computers world-wide and will be able
to offer more effective services to its users.
The installation of an audiovisual system, which will consist of :
video, CD-I, video projector, display, stereo recorder as well as of a
portable computer for presentations.
The enrichement of video-tapes and audio-cassettes collection. In that
way, the Library will be in the position to cover both educational and
recreational needs of its users.
The installation of a satellite antena and its decoder which will
allow the broadcasting of educational programs.
The development of a multimedia applications program for the virtual
navigation within the Library premises. Also, the development and
installation of a user education program concerning the services
available (e.g. Book-Serials search, loan, orders,
CD-ROM databases search, microfishe and microfilm equipment use).
The Professional development and in-house training of the staff so as
to be able to keep pace with the technological advancements and new
trends in Library scienec.
